law of intra-urban movement Xiao Liang,∗ Jichang Zhao,† Li Dong,‡ and Ke Xu§ State Key Lab of Software Development Environment, Beihang University Abstract It is very important to understand urban mobility patterns because most trips are concentrated in urban areas. In the paper, a new model is proposed to model collective human mobility in urban areas. The model can be applied to predict individual flows not only in intra-city but also in countries or a larger range. Based on the model, it can be concluded that the exponential law of distance distribution is attributed to decreasing exponentially of average density of human travel demands. Since the distribution of human travel demands only depends on urban planning, population distribution, regional functions and so on, it illustrates that these inherent properties of cities are impetus to drive collective human movements.

A universal law in human mobility

The intrinsic factor that drives the human movement remains unclear for decades. While our observations from intra-urban and inter-urban trips both demonstrate a universal law in human mobility. Be specific, the probability from one location to another is inversely proportional to the number of population living in locations which are closer than the destination. A simple rank-based model is th...

Unraveling the origin of exponential law in intra-urban human mobility

The vast majority of travel takes place within cities. Recently, new data has become available which allows for the discovery of urban mobility patterns which differ from established results about long distance travel. Specifically, the latest evidence increasingly points to exponential trip length distributions, contrary to the scaling laws observed on larger scales. In this paper, in order to...

Understanding Temporal Human Mobility Patterns in a City by Mobile Cellular Data Mining, Case Study: Tehran City

Recent studies have shown that urban complex behaviors like human mobility should be examined by newer and smarter methods. The ubiquitous use of mobile phones and other smart communication devices helps us use a bigger amount of data that can be browsed by the hours of the day, the days of the week, geographic area, meteorological conditions, and so on. In this article, mobile cellular data mi...

The scaling of human mobility by taxis is exponential

As a significant factor in urban planning, traffic forecasting and prediction of epidemics, modeling patterns of human mobility draws intensive attention from researchers for decades. Power-law distribution and its variations are observed from quite a few real-world human mobility datasets such as the movements of banking notes, trackings of cell phone users’ locations and trajectories of vehic...

Human Trajectories Characteristics

Communication devices (mobile networks, social media platforms) are produced digital traces for their users either voluntarily or not. This type of collective data can give powerful indications on their effect on urban systems design and development. For understanding the collective human behavior of urban city, the modeling techniques could be used. In this study the most important feature of ...
